Embarking on a journey of therapy can be transformative and at Tanner Psychology, our practitioners are committed to creating a welcoming and accepting space for you. They are dedicated to listening and guiding you towards overcoming any obstacles that you may be facing.
In your first session, you'll have the opportunity to connect with your therapist, share your story, and identify your goals. In the following sessions, you'll explore yourself deeper and learn practical strategies to help you grow and flourish.
While we typically recommend 10-20 sessions, the number of sessions will be tailored to your individual needs. We are committed to supporting you every step of the way.
Tanner Psychology warmly welcomes everyone to join our online therapy sessions with our experienced counsellors. With the help of Zoom, our online counselling services provide a secure, convenient, and accessible option for people unable to attend in-person appointments or who prefer virtual meetings. Whether it's because of a busy work or family schedule, health issues, or distance, our online counselling services are available to support you.
For a seamless online therapy session, we recommend taking 5-10 minutes beforehand to prepare. Ensure that your computer or phone's microphone and video are working correctly and that you are seated comfortably and ready to engage without disturbance.
It's important to note that there's no need to feel pressured to prepare anything for your first session. However, if you find it beneficial, you may want to jot down specific points or topics you would like to discuss with your therapist.
If you're a new customer, you can pay for your booking using a debit or credit card. For returning customers, there are more payment options available. You can authorise a direct debit or use the payment link on your invoice to pay online.
In order to visit a psychologist at Tanner Psychology, it is necessary to obtain a referral from your GP. This referral should contain information about why you need to see the psychologist, the type of plan you have, and the number of sessions you are entitled to. The referral should also include the contact details and signature of your GP.
Additionally, you will need to have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) filled out by your GP. This plan should include details about your medical history and current situation, an item number, as well as the signature and date from your GP.
Initial Plan
To create your Initial Plan, we require your GP's provider number, address, phone number, full name, and signature, along with your full name and date of birth. It should also include the date of the Initial Plan and the type of referral, such as Initial (6 sessions) or Review (4 sessions).
Your GP will also need to provide a Mental Health Care Plan to support your practitioner in creating the best strategy for you.
Review Plan
For the Review Plan, please ensure it includes the GP's details, Tanner Psychology’s address, and an item number (such as 2712) or plan type (Review). The number of sessions specified should be between 4 and 6.
Medicare regulations require that referrals be explicitly addressed to Tanner Psychology or your designated practitioner. As a result, we cannot accept referrals that do not meet these requirements. You will need to contact your GP prior to your first session.
If you're seeking mental health services, you can get a portion of your session fee covered by the Australian government through Medicare rebates. To qualify, you'll need to obtain a referral from your general practitioner and have an up-to-date Mental Health Care Plan. It's important to note that this rebate only applies if you see a psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, and not a psychotherapist, counsellor, or coach.
The Medicare rebate depends on the type of psychologist or therapist you see.
If you are consulting with a Clinical Psychologist, you will be eligible for a rebate of $136.35 through Medicare.
Kindly refer to the table below for our therapy fees and Medicare rebates. Please note that these prices are for therapy sessions only. To view our assessment fees, click here.

We can process your Medicare rebate, or you can process it yourself.
If you choose to process it yourself, we recommend using the Express Plus mobile app to make it simple and straightforward.
After you’ve paid the full up-front fee and have had your session with us, we’ll send you an invoice. This invoice will have all the information you need to lodge your claim directly with Medicare using the Express Plus Medicare App on your smartphone.
To claim, simply follow these three steps:
Step 1: Download the Express Plus Medicare mobile app from https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/how-to-download-and-set-up-express-plus-medicare-mobile-app?context=37386.
Step 2: Confirm that your bank details are current so that your Medicare rebate can be deposited.
Step 3: To file your claim, you'll need the invoice we sent you with all of the pertinent information regarding your session, including cost, payment, and provider number. We will email you the invoice after you have completed and paid for your session. https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/online-help/medicare/submit-medicare-claim-using-your-online-account
Typically, you can expect to receive your rebate within 24-48 hours, although it may take up to 7 days to appear in your bank account.
At the moment, we do not provide Bulk-Billing services. It is recommended that you consult your GP to find out about clinics that offer bulk billing in your area.
If you are unable to attend your appointment and need to reschedule, we kindly request that you provide us with a minimum of 24 hours' notice. Failure to do so will result in the full session fee being charged.
If you give us sufficient notice, we can find another client to take your appointment slot and ensure that our practitioners are fully occupied. To cancel your appointment, simply reply "N" to our recent text reminder, call us at 1300 411 025 or send an email to info@tannerpsychology.com.au.
The number of counselling or therapy sessions you'll require is not predetermined or restricted. Your counsellor or psychologist will collaborate with you to develop a treatment plan and assess it after the initial evaluation session.
Typically, we suggest beginning with six counselling sessions, but the appropriate number may vary depending on your specific objectives and level of distress. Clients should have an active role in determining the number of sessions they need, and while we'll make suggestions, the final decision is yours.
We cannot anticipate how many sessions you'll need before meeting you, but we can determine when more sessions can or cannot be helpful. Short-term treatments usually span four to twelve sessions, while longer-term treatments can address more complex or persistent issues.
Most clients attend sessions weekly or every two weeks, and they may decrease the frequency to monthly sessions when they feel they are ready to do so. We view therapy as a long-term process of commitment, development, and individual investment. After seeing your therapist for a while, you may want to schedule intermittent check-in sessions to maintain progress and increase your knowledge and resources.
We suggest booking between four and eight sessions with your practitioner in advance, as our calendars can fill up quickly.
The process and cost of your assessment will depend on the type of assessment you require. For more information, please click here.
