Neurodiversity-affirming Autism Spectrum Assessments
Tanner Psychology is a private assessment service that provides Autism testing for individuals aged 6 and above at our Castle Hill Clinic.
Children
The process of assessment includes gathering information, like specialist reports, to understand your child's developmental history and current needs. It also involves a one-hour intake interview with you, the parent or guardian, and a two-hour developmental diagnostic interview (ADI-R). You will also need to complete several questionnaires; depending on your child's age, they may need to complete some. Your child's teacher(s) may also be asked to complete questionnaires.
During the assessment, your child will participate in a two-hour play-based observational assessment (ADOS-2).
After the assessment, we will provide you with a comprehensive written report that includes all information provided by you, your child, and their school, as well as the assessment results (e.g., whether a diagnosis of Autism is confirmed or not). The report will include clinical observations and recommendations to support your child at home and school. We will also schedule a 50-minute feedback session to discuss the report and recommendations with you either at the clinic or through Zoom.
We aim to provide you with feedback on your report within a month of completing the assessment and receiving all necessary paperwork.
It might be helpful to add a Cognitive Assessment, also known as an IQ test, to the Autism assessment for your child. If your child hasn't had a recent cognitive assessment, it's worth considering adding it to the Autism assessment. This will require an additional two-hour testing session with your child, and the report will feature the findings and recommendations. This can be highly beneficial for education purposes.
It could also be beneficial to add an Educational Assessment to the Autism assessment for your child. This additional assessment will take two hours, and the outcomes and suggestions will be part of your report. This may be advantageous for educational purposes and can aid in detecting any Specific Learning Disorders like Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, or Dyslexia.
Adults
Our team conduct comprehensive interviews aimed at evaluating an individual's medical history, communication patterns, and current functioning. The outcome of our Autism assessments yields valuable insights that can significantly improve the quality of life for each person. Our approach prioritises a person-focused perspective that recognises and leverages every individual's unique strengths and challenges, empowering them to thrive beyond their diagnosis.
Please contact our clinical intake team at 1300 411 025 to discuss your situation.
During an assessment for autism, various assessment tools are employed, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule- Second Edition (ADOS-2), Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales- Third Edition (VABS-3) or Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System- Third Edition (ABAS-3), and Developmental Profile- Fourth Edition (DP-4).
Additionally, other questionnaires such as the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q), Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised (RAADS-R), Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-25), Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-Q), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales - Short Form (DASS-21) may be employed depending on the individual's age, situation, and presentation.
The clinician will determine the most appropriate assessment tools for the individual's case.
We offer three types of assessments for Autism:
In case additional observation sessions are required, they are charged at a rate of $240 per hour, along with travel expenses. These sessions are usually scheduled at the child's school.
The fee for the Initial Consultation is $300 which will be deducted from your overall assessment cost if you proceed.
Listed costs are approximate only, and a tailored quote will be given to you after a psychologist has determined your assessment needs.
*Prices are subject to change.
We offer two payment options: paying the total cost upfront or in instalments with the balance due before the feedback session.
Medicare
If you're under 25 years old and receiving care from a paediatrician or psychiatrist, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate under the "Complex neurodevelopmental disorder or eligible disability" scheme. To receive this rebate, you'll need to have a consultation with your paediatrician or psychiatrist and obtain a referral letter requesting an assessment of a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. The rebate can be up to $371.60 (after attendance) if you obtain an Autism assessment referral letter from your paediatrician or psychiatrist before starting the assessment. Remember to attach the referral letter to your intake paperwork when you submit it.
Private Health funds
Private health funds often provide rebates for assessment services. To ensure that psychology is covered and to know which item codes are used, it is essential to check with your health fund. The most frequently used codes are P100 for the primary psychology consultation and P200 for follow-up consultations. If your health fund employs different codes, please send an email to info@tannerpsychology.com.au with the relevant information. Kindly note that we are unable to handle private health rebates on your behalf, and you will have to submit them yourself.
NDIS
If you are looking to receive funding for assessments through the NDIS, there are two options available: self-management or plan-management. To proceed, we require information about whether you are self or plan-managed, as well as the contact details of your plan manager. It is important to verify that psychology services are approved in your NDIS plan before proceeding. Please note that we are not an NDIS provider and require payment prior to starting the assessment.

Here's how it works:
To assist in understanding your child's learning history and needs, we begin by collecting relevant information, such as school and specialist reports. Following this, we will conduct a one-hour intake interview with you or the parent/guardian (if the assessment is for a child). We will also ask you, your child's teacher(s), and your child (if applicable) to complete several questionnaires. After this, we will proceed with the assessment itself, which typically consists of two sessions, each lasting up to two hours. However, we can complete it in one extended session if preferred. Please note that the assessment must take place with your child and the Psychologist alone to adhere to standard testing procedures. You may choose to have the assessment done either at Tanner Psychology or your child's school. Kindly let us know your preference.
Once the assessment is complete, you will receive a comprehensive written report that incorporates all the information provided by you, your school, and the assessment results. This report will include clinical observations, relevant diagnoses, and practical recommendations to help your child thrive at home and school.
We'll also schedule a 50-minute feedback session to discuss the report and recommendations. This session can be held in person at the clinic or via Zoom. We highly recommend that a representative from your child's school is present.
We aim to complete your report with feedback within a month of completing the assessment and receiving all your paperwork.
Our standard fee is $1920
Fees for assessments that deviate from our standard procedure may differ and will be discussed during booking.
Those with private health insurance may be eligible for rebates on certain components of the assessment. We recommend that you confirm eligibility with your personal insurer prior to scheduling the assessment.
If you are an NDIS participant seeking to use NDIS funding for the assessment, we suggest you communicate with your LAC before booking. Unfortunately, we are unable to process NDIA-managed funding.
Please note that Medicare rebates are not available for these assessments.
*Prices are subject to change.
